Can a tiger’s roar actually paralyze you or are people saying this out of exaggeration?

Paralyzed by modern understanding? No.

What this is referencing is infrasound. Infrasound is a super low portion of sound waves that are felt and not heard. Animals of differing species react differently to this wave.

Some animals will “freeze” meaning, stop moving as their nervous system struggles to comprehend what it experienced & others interpret it aa fear. It’s usually INCREDIBLY brief.

Tigers typically roar for 2 reasons:

  1. Territorial purposes
  2. Locate mates or other tigers

They are NOT using their roar to paralyze or even interact with prey. So, these side effects are unintended & not beneficial.

There are instances of elephants hearing a roar and running off cliffs & others immediately dying. Now, both of these are huge outliers but they both occurred. Most big cat roars illicit an elephant to charge. With tigers, they run. As they can be predated on by them.
